Understanding Your Timeline

Understanding Your Timeline

The timeline is one of the most important tools in Cloud Counsel. It allows you to record the events that are relevant to your legal matter, in the order they happened.

Why does the timeline matter?

A detailed, accurate timeline helps your legal team understand the facts of your case. Every event you add provides context that may be critical to building your case strategy. Courts and opposing counsel rely heavily on chronological accounts of events.

Viewing the Timeline

Navigate to the Timeline tab within your matter. You'll see two views:

  • Feed view — a scrollable, chronological list of all events. This is the default view and is best for reading through events in order.
  • Calendar view — a calendar layout showing events on their dates. This is helpful for seeing the density and distribution of events over time.

You can switch between views using the toggle at the top of the timeline. The event count is displayed next to the title so you can see how many events have been recorded.

Adding an Event

  1. Navigate to the Timeline tab within your matter.
  2. Click "Add Event" to open the event statement form.
  3. Enter the date and time of the event. Be as precise as you can.
  4. Describe what happened in detail — who was present, what was said, where it occurred.
  5. Optionally, link related people, organizations, documents, or locations to the event.
  6. Save the event. You can always come back and edit it later.

Editing and Deleting Events

Click on any event to open it for editing. You can update the description, date, or linked items. If an event was added in error, you can delete it using the delete option.

Tips for a Strong Timeline

  • Be as specific as possible about dates and times.
  • Include who was present, what was said, and where it happened.
  • Don't worry about legal conclusions — just describe the facts as you remember them.
  • Add events as you remember them; they don't need to be entered in chronological order.
  • Link relevant documents to events when you have supporting evidence.
  • If you're unsure about a date, provide your best estimate and note the uncertainty in the description.

For Contributors

As a contributor, you can see and manage only the events you've personally attested to. Your events are part of the larger case timeline that the legal team assembles from all sources.
